I’m not usually a blog reader nor do I ever respond to them, but I thought I would give it a shot. I was once like you; I viewed Frisbee as a fun, non competitive game that I played at my Jewish camp (sometimes on Shabbat). I was always a decent Frisbee catcher, and had heard of Ultimate Frisbee, but had never really been privy to the culture that surrounded it. It wasn’t until my boyfriend introduced me to the nature of Ultimate that I realized how large and intense this “Frisbee culture” is. After long practices of learning the various strategies and rules to the game I decided to join a league. After all, what did I have to loose? I love trying new things, being outside, getting exercise, and meeting new people. However, nothing could have prepared me for the intensity and athleticism that Ultimate encompasses. Not only were most of my rivals not Jewish (huge surprise to me), but I ran my ass off, learned how to strategize game plans, and was witness to numerous, but minor Frisbee oriented disputes. When I told my mom I was going to be in an intense Frisbee league, she definitely wasn’t as frightened as when she took me to my soccer games. But when I came home after each game limping from a knee injury, or bruised all over my bottom half, she definitely uttered a Jewish sigh. I mean no offense to the writer of this blog; actually, you have influenced this blog non reader to give blogs a chance. But I have to say that it is only Jewish people who have no experience in an actual Ultimate league that would ever say that Ultimate is a “Jewish game”. From the beginning of the summer until now, I was on two teams that were predominantly non- Jewish, and my rivals varied in culture from Asian to African American. Also, Ultimate Frisbee is the combination of the most fascinating components of football and soccer; sports invented by non-Jews. It is more accurate to call basketball a Jewish sport since it was actually invented and dominated by Jews during its earliest days. I urge anyone who hasn’t played Ultimate to check it out; you will be very surprised by how multi-cultural the game is, and you will definitely be convinced that it should become an official sport.
